The lecturers involved with the BDSS have a wealth of experience from the business arena to the swimming industry. They have been hand picked for their passion, knowledge, experience and presentation.
Sue Royston
Toddlers/preschoolers
Founder and owner of Swim Safe swim school in Nevada City California and has been teaching for some 35 years. Sue teachers learn to swim skills with a non-threatening and positive approach.. As well as being author of numerous articles on children’s swimming and water safety. She has produced videos regarding ‘Water Safety for Kids’ and ‘Swim Lessons for Kids’ which have won her international awards and were endorsed by the American Pediatrics Association and NSSA (National Swim School owners Association) Additionally, Sue competed in the first women’s Alcatraz to San Francisco race and is a nominee for the International Swimming Hall of fame. Sue comes Highly recommended to all.
Jeff Purchin
5 – 10 year olds…. Beginners /Advanced
During 1975 Jeff started teaching swimming lessons and by 1977 had started his own Learn to Swim business in Los Angeles---going to peoples homes and teaching all ages. 1981 he graduated with a BA degree from San Diego State University in Business and Recreation. 1984 saw Jeff open up a Swim School in Arroyo Grande California, where he leased a pool, covered it, put in a heating system and ran a year round program. In 1994 Jeff purchased property in Arroyo Grande and built an Indoor facility which opened October 1995. His swim school currently teaches over 3,500 children per year in ‘Learn to Swim’, also conducting Adult water Therapy, Water Exercise classes and Infant classes.
Soozzee Edminster
Adults
Soozzee is a certified Water Safety Instructor and taught Red Cross Swimming for twelve years which included life guarding and swim coaching at the recreational level. She has owned and operated a dance studio for ten years, instructing students 18 months through to adults in ballet, tap, jazz and aerobics. While an aerobics instructor for DancErgetics Inc..she developed a fitness program for the City of Tulare recreation department and a spring training program for a local high school and junior college football team.
Soozzee currently works in the performing arts department at the Creative Center, a school for adults who are developmentally disabled. She develops and instructs the dance and fitness programs, including Play Productions and the Special Olympics program.. Soozzee is a certified U.S. swim coach and worked for two years with Olympic gold medallist, Matt Vogel. In November of 1997 she began coaching age group swimming for a year round United States Swim Team. She received further training at the Lake Placid Olympic Training Center in New York State. Soozzee also currently works in the Lifestyles Center aquatics department, teaching aquatic fitness classes, group and private swim lessons to all ages including stroke technique to all levels of swim competitors.
Helene Smith RN
Basic Anatomy & Physiology
Is an English trained Nurse who has specialized in renal medicine. She is currently the Director of Nurses at a private facility and has a way of communicating to students so they can understand and learn quickly.
Mary Hill
Basic Business Principals
A Long time career in banking/investing and currently the VP of an Investment Bank. Mary was Visalia’s Business Woman of the Year and is a women’s entrepreneurial coach.
Dr RJ Rice MD
Health Related Issues
Dr Rice, who has a leaning toward alternative medicine, knows when it is the right time to use either traditional or alternative medicine. Dr Rice has worked extensively with people with allergies and will facilitate lectures about health related issues connected with swimming and how they play a part in ones day to day life. He works in conjunction with chiropractors and alternative practitioners where required.
